Otahu River, Whangamata – oil of canvas, painted on 2012
"Arthur has painted for us a scene of a place which is very well known and much loved by my husband, myself and extended family. We have visited and holidayed at this place for many years. The picture has been viewed by these family members and by friends where we live in Rotorua. Everyone comments on the shades of colour used and how peaceful and gentle they are while still suiting the type of scene it is. For us who know the place well, we enjoy the accuracy of detail he has attained and like the ‘mood’ created.
The scene shows an estuary with a sweeping curve of water and tree covered hills behind. There is also an area of bank and some overhanging branches of trees in the foreground. The tide is partially in and so areas of sand have been captured in all their many shades of colour. The place Arthur has painted is tidal and so has many changes to its overall appearance within a relatively short space of time. The way Arthur has chosen to depict this special place displays this exact characteristic; that it is a place that changes and can look quite different from hour to hour and day to day. Indeed where it hangs in our home the changing light on it during the day and night can create quite different looks. Lastly, every day we appreciate having this piece of art hanging on our wall in our home." Lynette, Rotorua, NZ
